Active holiday at Borgo di Campagna? Trekking on Tavolara Island!
Two excursions of your choice for maximum thrills: routes for beginners or professionals for a breathtaking excursion.
One of the most beautiful and practicable excursions in the area is certainly the trekking that takes you to the summit of Tavolara Island. This majestic limestone massif overlooking the sea offers a unique landscape spectacle whether we are talking about sea or land. In fact, the beach is a beautiful stretch of sand in front of a crystal clear sea which becomes even more beautiful if you go to the smaller island of Molara.
But Tavolara is also land, that is, a massif that rises up to 564 meters high from the beach, dominating the entire Gallura coast.
Trekking
Although “practicable”, the excursion to Tavolara is only recommended for people in good health and who do not suffer from vertigo. With that said, off we go!
There are mainly two excursions: the first is suitable for everyone and divided into two parts, i.e. the free part and the equipped part, while the second (via ferrata degli angeli) of a mountaineering nature is considerably more challenging.
Whether you choose the first or the second, the departure is always from Spalmatore beach. The first route is the simplest and freest in the sense that there is no need for equipment or anything else. It lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes, traveling along the coast in an easterly direction near the old lime kilns and crossing the dense Mediterranean scrub that leads to the first rocky ledge. From here, via a juniper staircase you continue between the two ledges until you reach the valley called “bocca del cannon” from which you begin to see the beautiful panorama.
Once you reach the mouth, however, it’s not over because to reach the grassy surface you have to put on the via ferrata equipment and tackle the self-secured equipped route (EEA) located overhanging! The climb becomes more and more adrenaline-filled… But once you have crossed the beautiful mouth of the cannon and another equipped segment you finally reach the summit of Punta cannone at 564 meters above sea level. From here you can finally enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire Gallura coast. From here you can easily recognize Molara, Capo Coda Cavallo, San Teodoro, Olbia, Mount Limbara up to Capo Figari, Caprera and Corsica!
Usually the arrival at the summit coincides with a packed lunch and a salute to the Madonna who protects all sailors.
Recommendations and Instructions
The excursion route is approximately 6.2 km with a difference in altitude of 600 metres. The primary equipment is very simple, i.e. trekking shoes and backpack, while the professional equipment consists of a helmet, harness and via ferrata kit. Lunch is packed and a bottle of water of at least 2 liters, sunscreen, sunglasses and hat are recommended.
