Stazzi Galluresi: the houses of shepards and farmers in Gallura

What is a “stazzo” ?

A stazzo or “lu stazzu” is a rectangular house on a private ground. Stazzo means house and ground.

A stazzu is rectangular with a sharp roof, the entrance in the middle and windows only at the long side of the house.

The original stazzo consists of one room which is called “casa manna”. There is a fireplace in the middle of the house (“la ziddha a meza casa”). If the house has been amplified adding a larder (“lappusentu”) or a sleeping room (“la cambara”) it is called “casa manna”. If the house has been built higher it is called “lu palazzu”.

The houses were built of granite and clay and inside they’re made of juniper wood,  reed and oak wood. Many constructors and privat people have renovated the ruinous stazzi for tourism porposes (agriturismi, b&b, holiday homes).
