Discovering the Macchia Mediterranea in Gallura !
A sanctuary of biodiversity among holm oaks, cork oaks, myrtle and many other plants with unique characteristics.
Il Borgo di Campagna, our rural hotel in the heart of Gallura, Sardinia, offers a unique experience in close contact with the unspoilt nature of the Mediterranean maquis. The beauty of the surrounding landscape is characterised by a rich variety of native plants that define the charm of the Sardinian territory. In this article, we explore the wonders of the Mediterranean maquis and its importance to the environment and the experience of staying at the Borgo.
A Unique Plant Heritage
The Mediterranean maquis is an ecosystem typical of regions bordering the Mediterranean, known for its incredible biodiversity and its resistance to often difficult climatic conditions. This ecosystem makes your stay at our rural hotel in Sardinia unique, where you can immerse yourself in this unique environment, surrounded by a variety of plants that tell the story of this territory.
Among the most characteristic trees are the holm oaks and cork oaks, whose twisted trunks and rough bark create an evocative and fascinating landscape. The holm oaks are evergreen trees that offer natural coolness, while the cork oaks, from which the precious cork is obtained, are symbols of an ancient tradition that has been handed down for generations.
Alongside the holm oaks and cork oaks, we find expanses of wild olive and arbequina trees, which not only enrich the landscape with their silvery green colour, but also contribute to the production of our olive oil. The wild and hardy wild olive trees represent the strength of Sardinian nature, capable of adapting and thriving even in difficult conditions.
The scent of the Mediterranean scrub
Walking along the paths of our hotel in Sardinia, one is enveloped by the unmistakable scent of the Mediterranean macchia. Aromatic plants such as myrtle, rosemary, cistus and mastic fill the air with intense, rejuvenating fragrances. The myrtle, in particular, is an iconic plant of Sardinia: from its fruits the famous myrtle liqueur is produced, representing one of the most authentic flavours of the island.
Rosemary and cistus, with their delicate flowers, colour the landscape and attract bees and pollinating insects, which are essential to the balance of the local ecosystem. The mastic tree, with its red berries, is another typical element of this environment and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and local cuisine.
An Oasis of Peace and Biodiversity
The Mediterranean maquis is a true sanctuary of biodiversity, where every plant and every tree plays a fundamental role in the natural balance of the area. Walking along the paths through the maquis means not only relaxing and regenerating, but also rediscovering the value of nature and the need to protect it.
Our guests can experience a regenerating walk among the holm oaks and cork trees, stop in the shade of a centuries-old olive tree and listen to the song of the birds that inhabit these trees. Every corner tells a story of harmony between man and nature, a story that continues thanks to our commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.
The Borgo di Campagna is not just a place to stay, but an opportunity to immerse oneself in the authentic beauty of the Mediterranean maquis. This natural heritage is an integral part of the experience of staying, an invitation to rediscover the deep connection with the land and to live in harmony with the environment that surrounds us.
